Course Description
The elements and principles of geography, including earth-sun relationships, land forms,
climates, soils, water, forests, and mineral fuels are considered globally and regionally.
World regions are identified and described in view of their physical, cultural, political,
economic, resource, and urban environments.

Objectives
Students in Principles of Geography should:
- Understand geography as an academic discipline, the scope of its inquiry and become familiar
with the major themes of geography.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between geological, atmospheric and
biological processes and the evolution of landscapes.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the major variables in population geography.
- Understand cultural variables and apply them to the study of culture realms and culture hearths.
- Understand the principal areas of geographic study including physical, cultural,
political, economic, ecological, and urban geography and cartography.
- Learn prominent place locations and to use the grid system.

Course Materials
Textbook: Introduction to Geography, 9th edition, by Arthur Getis, Judith Getis,
and Jerome D. Fellmann. Boston: McGraw Hill, 2004.
Study Guide: The Power of Place: World Regional Geography, third edition, by Gil Latz.
NY: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2004.
Telelessons: Twenty-six (26) video tapes, 30 minutes each.
(These are to be checked out at the GCCC Library).
Website: http://socsci.gc.cc.fl.us/geo1010lk/.
The website will provide you with grades, study hints, testing dates, blank maps, my email etc.

Method of Instruction
For this class you will need a personal e-mail address. If you don't already have one,
contact me or the library help desk (upstairs) about setting up a free account, such as hotmail.
I feel that it is important for each student to understand this process and know how to use email,
as well as the course website.

Before viewing the telelessons, read the "OVERVIEW" and the "
DISCUSSION OF TELELESSONS CONCEPTS" provided at the beginning of each lesson.

View the telelessons, taking notes as necessary to answer the "TEST YOUR
UNDERSTANDING" questions in each lesson.

Read the section "CONSIDER THE DISCIPLINE" and be sure you understand the boldface terms.

Read the sections in the textbook suggested in the website study guide for each unit.
http://socsci.gc.cc.fl.us/geo1010lk

Review the terms listed in the website study guide study hints for the respective unit.

Evaluation
Students will be evaluated by three (3) examinations.
Each of the three (3) examinations will count 1/3 of the course grade.
If a student cannot take a regularly scheduled examination,
the instructor must be contacted in advance, and arrangements made for a make-up.

The test dates should not be considered flexible. Students will be held to the same
standard as in a lecture class. Only one make-up exam will be given per student.
Work, illness, or similar conflicts will be excused once.

It is the student's responsibility to take the examinations on the scheduled dates.
If a true emergency prevents you from taking an examination when scheduled,
contact the course instructor within one week to and arrange to make-up the test during that week.
Make-up exams will be given at the instructor's discretion.
Please note that make-up exams may be in essay form. The instructor is expected to withdraw a
student who misses a test from the course is there is no contact. The final examination is
comprehensive, that is covers all the material from the semester.

Withdrawal Policy: Withdrawals initiated prior to midterm will be recorded as "W."
Withdrawals initiated the week after the posting of midterm grades will be recorded as "W"
if passing and "F" if failing.
