Course Description:
Geography bridges the social and the physical sciences in its study of the connection between human 
activities and earth processes and how these interact to create the patterns we observe on the earth's 
surface.  Natural landscapes and conservation, cultural regions & population, urban geography, global
economics & resource use, and political geography all fall within the scope of this course.

Objectives:          
        -develop a knowledge of man's habitat,                  
        -use this knowledge as a basis for an improved understanding of the problems facing man,              
        -gain a basic understanding of the tools of geography and how to apply them,             
        -become familiar with rudimentary physical geography,
        -understand how the regional distribution and use of world resources affect political conditions, and  
        -improve place-name competence.

  Method of Instruction
       - Read the chapters indicated in the textbook.
       - Look over the Textbook Study Guides on the course website, taking notes as necessary
       to understand the terms and concepts listed.  
       - View the videos. You can view them online at ww.Learner.org as well.
       - Review the Video Study Guides on the course website, taking notes as necessary. 
       - I may post extra study hints on Angel or the class website.
       - Online quizzes are designed to help you master the material.  They are open-book/notes. You will 
          need good internet access.
       You should list your current email address in the Angel system as I will notify 
       you of new postings & assignments by that email address alone. I do not keep track of individual emails and return addresses.
        
        Evaluation: Students will be evaluated by three (3) examinations and three 
        (3) online quizzes.  Online quizzes must be completed before you can take the test.
        I will post the first online quiz soon.  It is open book, but you should prepare for it as it is time limited.
        Each will count the following:
        
        Online Quizzes Part 1 	10 points
        Test 1 		20 points
        Online Quizzes Part  2 	10 points
        Test 2 		20 points
        Online Quizzes Part  3 	10 points
        Final Exam  		30 points
        
        If a student cannot take a regularly scheduled examination, the instructor 
        and the Distance Learning Office must be contacted in advance. It is the 
        student's responsibility to take the examinations on the scheduled dates. 
        If an emergency prevents you from taking an examination when scheduled, 
        contact the course instructor within one week to and arrange to make-up 
        the test during that week. Make-up exams will be given at the instructor's 
        discretion. Please note that make-up exams may be in essay form. The instructor 
        is expected to withdraw a student who misses a test from the course if there is 
        no contact. There will be a comprehensive final examination. Consult
        college catalogue for grading scale. 
        Orientation The instructor will conduct an orientation to this course 
        during the first week of classes. The date, time and location are shown on 
        Blackboard. Your attendance is requested. You need not call to report your 
        pending absence from the orientation. An email with specific information will 
        be sent by the second week. If you do not receive the email, contact the 
        instructor or the Distance Learning Office immediately. 
        Procedures While the instruction method of this course is flexible, 
        the test dates should not be considered flexible. Students will be held to the 
        same standard as in a lecture class. Only one make-up exam will be given per student.
        Work, illness, or similar conflicts will be excused once.

        checked out from the Circulation Desk in the college library. This course may be broadcast 
        over the local television stations, however, the lessons may not follow the course outline.
